Virgil Kent Jeffery, 61, of Hartsburg, passed away August 8, 2026, in Westphalia, Missouri. Born June 3, 1965, in Jefferson City to the late Donald Bruce and Carolyn Jean (Austeel) Jeffery, Virgil grew up near Hartsburg and attended Southern Boone County R-1 in Ashland.

Following high school, Virgil proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He later dedicated his career as a crane operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 513 for 35 years, building a lifelong loyalty to his union and a fierce brotherhood with his fellow members.

On September 15, 2018, Virgil married the love of his life and soulmate, Melanie McNally. Their marriage was a true partnership, rich with laughter, deep love, and unwavering commitment.

To know Virgil Kent was to understand that he lived entirely on his own terms. Uninterested in standard convention, he operated by his own rules, held his own view of the world, and delivered his own unapologetic version of every story. Virgil commanded any room he entered and delighted in gentle teasing that no one escaped.

His life can best be summed up in three words: The Man. The Myth. The Mower.

• • • • The Man: Virgil Kent was a force of nature. Unforgettable, fiercely loyal, and larger than life, he made an enduring impression on everyone he encountered. He was as stubborn as the day was long, but that steadfast nature defined his strength and devotion to those he loved.
        The Myth: Virgil’s myth wasn't built on perfection; it was built on presence. He had a rare gift for making genuine connections, always leaving behind a story worth telling. While life can be measured in years, a myth is measured in the stories that live on. His legacy will be kept alive in the laughter shared around dinner tables whenever someone begins a sentence with, “Remember that one time Virgil…”
        The Mower: Anyone who regularly drove Route M knew of his legendary dedication to his lawn. Guided by his personal philosophy, “cut that sh*t down to the dirt, then complain all July and August about how brown it is,” his meticulous yard was a source of pride, humor, and local fame.

Virgil Kent was loved deeply and left us far too soon, leaving a void that cannot be filled. While we grieve his sudden loss, we celebrate a man who lived fully, loved fiercely, and left an unforgettable mark on the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Terrence E. McNally, brother-in-law, Jerry Jasper, and sister-in-law, Gerri Jeffery.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Melanie Jeffery, three daughters, Karley (Russell) Luetkemeyer, St. Elizabeth, MO, Holynn Jeffery (Zach Cummings) Jefferson City, MO and Rain Cross, Little Rock, AR, three siblings, Stephen Jeffery, Tebbets, MO, Roxann Jasper, Washington, MO and LaDona (Chester) Livell, Washington, MO, two granddaughters, Sutton and Elliott Luetkemeyer, red-headed step children, Austin, Marylyn, Claira and Charlie Bruce Sherman, Palmyra, MO, mother-in-law Alice (Shawn) Hernandez, Jefferson City, MO, brothers-in-law, Bryant (Stacey) McNally, Pensacola, FL, and Stephen (Lorrel) McNally, Nixa, MO, sister-in-law, Natalie McNally (Nat Bingham), Republic, MO, sister-in-law, Ashlee Hernandez, Jefferson City, MO, other relatives and many friends.
