Larry Keith Marshall, 81, of Ashland, passed away on January 19, 2025. He was born in the small town of Blue Eye, Arkansas, on July 3, 1943. The almost firecracker was the oldest of three boys born to Henry and Lois Martin Marshall. They moved to Fulton, Missouri, when Larry was in junior high school. The family’s youngest son was deaf and by moving to Fulton, he could attend Missouri School for the Deaf and still live with the family. Larry graduated from Fulton High School in 1961. He was baptized in the Free Will Baptist Church, Blue Eye, while attending college at School of the Ozarks at Point Lookout, Missouri. He transferred to College of the Ozarks at Clarksville, Arkansas, then attended Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, to fulfill his ROTC requirement for a semester, then returned to College of the Ozarks to graduate. His interest in sports led him to many awards in football, track, and basketball. Larry had a degree in physical education and a minor in business. Instead of starting his teaching and coaching career as planned, he was called to active duty in the Army. He resigned his teaching position before it began to enter the service. His orders were then delayed for six months so he worked at First National Bank in Columbia, Missouri. When his new orders came, he was sent to Camp Casey, Korea, as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He served there for 13 months. When he returned from service, he went into the Reserves, then the Missouri National Guard. He retired with a total of 24 years of service as a Lt. Colonel.

Larry was working as an Assistant Vice-President with First National Bank in Columbia when he met Lois Campbell. A former classmate of Larry’s was teaching in Marceline, Missouri and arranged a blind date to meet a young teacher. She cancelled at the last minute and Lois filled in. After dating for 3 ½ years they were married on July 30, 1976. They lived in Columbia for 3 years. Larry’s father was diagnosed with a non-malignant brain tumor in 1979, and after surgery he needed help with his farm in Arkansas. Larry found a job in a bank at Branson and Lois taught at Forsyth. Their home at Kirbyville was within 30 miles from his parent’s home so was a distance easily traveled. Their son, Timothy, was born in 1982 at Branson. At about that same time Larry became aware of problems with the bank and decided to resign his job. By this time Larry’s father was doing well again and after several phone calls and a visit to Ashland and Fulton, Larry and Lois both had jobs again at the bank in Fulton and the school in Ashland.

Larry had many interests and was always busy. He received a degree in Criminal Justice and was a Special Deputy for the Sheriff’s Department in Boone County. He took flying lessons after Timothy was born and finished his pilot’s license. He later added instrument, commercial and instructor’s licenses. He left banking and began flying commercially. He eventually became a corporate pilot leaving out of Columbia or Jefferson City for many years. He officiated basketball and volleyball for 30+ years. He also rode and showed horses for many years. After retiring from flying, he was able to serve as Middle School Assistant Football Coach for Southern Boone Schools. He felt honored to be able to do this and was pleased to have his former players still call him “Coach”. He was honored to also mentor many young pilots over the years. His quick wit and bantering with others will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; son, Timothy; brother, Bryce Marshall; half-sister, Jacque Miller; great niece, Kasi Nelson and daughter, Whitney.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gordon Marshall; half-sister, Charlyn Rice; niece, Mandi Marshall Chaney; sister-in-law, Sharon “Sherri” Bedsworth Marshall and his favorite mother-in-law, Donna Gayle Campbell.
