Obituary

John Lynn Scheer, 78, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. A lifelong Lutheran, his faith quietly guided the way he lived—treating others with kindness, humility, and a steady, welcoming spirit.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; three sons: Brent (Angela) Scheer of Ashland, Ryan Scheer and Melissa Scheer of Ashland, and Christopher (Kristy) Scheer of Dardenne Prairie. He was a proud grandfather to Kade, Jacey, Allie, Lainie, Kealie, and Landrie, who brought him endless joy. He also had a soft spot for the many dogs and cats that were part of the family over the years.

He is further survived by his brothers, Harold (Eunice) Scheer and Mark (RuthAnn) Scheer, of Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom remained closely connected. The Scheer family reunions were, on several occasions, described as legendary—filled with laughter, stories, and memories that stayed with him for a lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Vivian Scheer; his siblings, Dean and Bernita; and his Uncle Jerry and Aunt Jane.

Born and raised on a farm in east central Iowa, John learned early the value of hard work and family. He graduated a Lisbon Lion in 1966 and was later drafted into the United States Army, serving honorably, including time in Germany.

On August 7, 1971, he married Susan Kay Barker, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, family, and friendship. In 1978, they made their home in Ashland, Missouri, where they were warmly welcomed and formed friendships that would last a lifetime.

Nowhere was that more evident than at “Scheer’s Pond.” While working at Square D, he was known for hosting memorable get-togethers—bringing together family, friends, neighbors, and just about anyone who stopped by. There were countless days spent fishing, catching frogs, swimming, and sharing stories over a cold beer. To many, John was more than a friend—he was a second dad.

He had a love for fast cars, especially his 1967 and 1970 GTOs, and was well known for having a bit of a lead foot.

John and Sue shared many close friendships over the years, including time with the Clarks, making memories in both Iowa and Missouri—especially at the pond and along the river, including the unforgettable catfish of 1980.

After moving to Ashland, friendships quickly formed—far too many to name—but their neighbors, the Forsees, Basingers, and Shermans, held a special place, as both the kids and parents always found time to be together.

For the past 20 years, John faced multiple sclerosis with quiet strength. While it slowed him down, it never changed who he was. He loved listening to his grandchildren’s stories and always took a genuine interest in his sons’ lives, especially how work and business were going.

John will be remembered for his sense of humor and the way he made people feel at home. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be carried on by all who loved him.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at Family of Christ Lutheran Church, 408 S Main St in Ashland, MO from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral Services honoring John will be Thursday, June 25, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2201 West Rollins Rd in Columbia, MO at 10:30am. Burial will follow at New Liberty Cemetery located at 15401 S Palis Nichols Rd, Hartsburg, MO.
